Twitter Assignment

Assignment: Connecting with Twitter Experts

(Clker-Free-Vector-Images)

PART 1: Connecting

Because our teacher recently made us create an account on twitter, he also made us become active users asking for information about a subject of our interest to experts.  The assignment’s goal was to receive responses giving information about the chosen subject of interest. In my case, I chose the designing of 3D skate parks to later create one of my own on sketchup.

Here is the list of the people I followed:

(472301)

Overall, I chose to follow those accounts for the same criterias. The first one was obviouvlsy that their account related to my topic. In other words, their account had to include tweets or re-tweets about the topic. The second one was that the account had to follow and be followed by accounts that are also related to the topic. The last criteria was that the account had to be active, meaning that their last tweet had to be from maximum a few days ago.

My initial idea for this project did not involve linking it to my Genius Hour project number 2 (read the previous post about Genius Hour 1). However, once I started to get several interesting responses that I figured out would really help me, I decided that my Genius Hour number 2 would be about creating a 3D skate park.

(Ramadan, Anas)

When it came to asking the experts information to learn more, I really had two main gaps in my knowledge. The first one was to create a round – type figure that would be used a “roll in” on a skateboard ramp. The second one regarded skate parks engineering which I exactly knew who could help me with. I was following this old pro skater on Instagram called Tony Hawk and I knew he had created a foundation that were creating public skate parks in the U.S. As a result, I followed the THF (Tony Hawk Foundation) and asked them what the perfect skate park would include (in terms of obstacles).

As with the formatting of the questions, I made sure it was professional but also specific to that one person. I first started with the polite words “hello @Account”  or “Dear”. After that, I explained that I was working on a school project regarding a 3D design and needed help with it. The next step was to ask the actual question, which slighty differed from expert to expert. Lastly, I mentioned the ISD and DC9 twitter accounts as a “proof” that I was part of a class. Here is on example of my tweets: “Hi , As I told you before, I am currently working on a sketchup project. My goal is to create the perfect skatepark. Do you know any techniques to create wave -shaped objects ?

Because I knew that not all the members from my list would answer me, I asked similar questions to them. and if by chance most would have answered me, I wasn’t going to get all the same answers, therefore learn more.  Using the shown tweet as an example, knowing what, in their opinion, the perfect skatepark would include would give me a sense of what I should do and what I should not do. Fortunately, THF responded and this is what they told me: “That’s a good question! In our opinion you only need two things. 1) A good mix of street and transition. 2) Concrete. (For good design tips, study the pros and go to

As you can see, they even gave me a link that is very useful. Know that I know more about the topic, I know that my 3D skatepark will be better that if I hadn’t got this response.

Part 2: Reflecting

(Hassan, Mohamed)

As previously mentioned, I did get several responses, however I wished for more. Because I continue the conversation with most who answered me, I was able to learn quite a lot. Here are all the responses I got to my requests:

From

  • “Hi Leon – Are you having any trouble with your model! Let me know if you have specific issues – Thanks!”
  • “Couple options – probably the easiest is to draw the profile and extrude it out with push pull”
  • “If you get real crazy, you might use an extension like curviloft or soap skin and bubble to generate faces”

From

  • “That’s a good question! In our opinion you only need two things. 1) A good mix of street and transition. 2) Concrete. (For good design tips, study the pros and go to )”

I then started to create my 3D skate-park and shared with them a screemshot of it to get feedback. Here is what they said:

  • “Great start! 👍

  • “That’s a great start! Keep refining and learning from current designers. You’ll find your own style soon – and we’re excited to see it!”

To be honest, I did not think that I would get that many responses. But the people were very helpful and I am glad they could even help me at all because experts don’t always have time to help students while they are working. While they did not follow me back, they did like my tweets and proposed extra help if needed. Using their response I am now able to create the best 3D skate park I can. Using this modern connecting system, I know can learn more about a topic without googling it or asking a teacher, but a twitter expert.

Part 3: Bonus – Steps to create a 3D skate park (this is a simple one)

  1. Choose your online platform (this might be sketchup or other)
  2. Create a list of obstacles you want to include
  3. Create a base
  4. You are free ! Design using your own style and have fun !

Here is what mine looks like right now (not finished yet):

Genius Hour 1 Reflection

(Budiman, Fajar)

♣ Research Question: What are the factors affecting fiberglass’ surfboards fragility ? ♣

For this research assignment, I studied the fragility of fiberglass surfboards. I wanted to learn what specific factors made this type of surfboards physically and chemically fragile. Also, I wanted to discover what other types of surfboards existed as a solution for the issue and why are they a solution. Lastly, I was also willing to learn about the  positive effects on the surfer of the board’s fragility (you will understand this later).

(Bourdeaux, Leon)

I decided to choose this topic because I recently bough a new fiberglass surfboard and noticed how fragile it is. The board is only 9 months old and already has a large number of dents and went more that a dozen of times to the surfboard repair technician. One reparation is not such a problem, but on the long-term scale, people can loose a lot of money on them and end up with a old-looking board.

(Youngson, Nick)

During the research, I was able to learn a large number of new information about the topic. I first learned more in depths about what daily factors can affect the board. These included heat, the wax you put on it, where and how you leave it when you are not surfing, and what to do when the board is dinged. For example, i already knew before the project that heat and sun light could create an air bubble, however, I did not know that it could also twist the board. Moreover, I did not know that not changing the wax every season to the corresponding one (according to the season) could also damage the board and fragilize the deck. Other factors that make the surfboards vulnerable to damages are the techniques used to build them. These

(PIRO4D.)

include the glass weight, which is most of the time light. Because the glass layer is so light, a little impact can cause a huge dent on the board. The problem in this case is that high performance surfboards require a light glass weight because it makes maneuvers easier to perform. Similarly with the foam’s density, high performance boards require a very weak density,  resulting into a vulnerable board to any small impact. Because I found this information relatively quickly, I was able to go beyond my research question and find a solution for this issue. An indirect solution for as existed for already the past decade: epoxy surfboards. These have a denser foam core and are overall stronger than fiberglass surfboards. However, because these are stronger, they do not provide a flex as good as fiberglass surfboards. For that reason, carbon wraps were created; they create a better flexibility on the board and make it more maneuverable. Adding on to the previous point, while fiberglass surfboards have negative indirect effects on the environment for various reasons, epoxy surfboards are causing avery few to no

(Kirie, Pantcho)

environmental damage. Often, intermediate surfers will prefer boards that float better (epoxy surfboards) in order to complete more tricks on a wave with more facility. I own both a fiberglass and epoxy surfboard and I know exactly which one to take in what conditions. If you want to know more about what board to take, scroll down to the last paragraph. Another solution, but this time more recent, would the evolving Nexgen Surfboards that were created by the brand Degree 33 Surfboards. These are a a perfect combination between fiberglass and epoxy surfboards. To simplify, Nexgen Surfboards to fiberglass and epoxy boards are like Iphones SE to the Iphone 5s and 6. The surfboards are in the body of a epoxy surfboard with the capacities of a fiberglass surfboards. While I did learn some more about surfboards overall, including their history, this is all I now know about my research question (if you forgot what the topic was because of all the interesting facts I happily just gave you, just scroll to the top !).

(Anthony)

Now that I am aware of all this information and all these facts, I won’t choose my next surfboard randomly, but instead make sure I know what can happen to it. Overall, I also grew as student because often people will just research about an issue and stop from there. Not only did I research about the issue, but I also found several potential solutions and ways to “reduce” the issue’s impact on surfers’ lives. ALOHA !

(Roy, Soumyabrata.)

As I earlier explained, Nexgen and epoxy surfboards’ impact on the environment was reduced compared to fiberglass surfboard. This can potentially be part of movements to preserve our nature and earth. Once a large number of people will be aware of this fact, it is very likely for them

to switch from fiberglass surfboards to epoxy or Nexgen. As a result, this research could somehow help our precious environment.

Because this interesting project is already finished, we are starting a new one, which will basically be the same except we have to pick a different topic of course…  While I am not sure yet what the topic will be, I am hoping to have a positive impact on myself and my community. I hoping to do so by teaching people around me something new, something helpful that they will use directly or later.

Once I finished researching, I presented to my class what I had found out. Here is the link to the google slide I created to share what I researched (the citations for the sources I used during my research are on the last few slides).  While I felt like my presentation went pretty well, I wasn’t satisfied with the grade I got. The presentation had to be about 3 minutes and respond to our research question. Also, to make sure my peers clearly understood the difference between epoxy and fiberglass surfboards, I brought my own surfboards to school.

Which board should YOU pick ?

(Peggy and Lachmann-Anke, Marco)

A lot of people who just began surfing and are getting themselves a board are not sure how to choose it. The most common options are: a fiberglass surfboard or an epoxy surfboard. Because I have both, I know exactly which one to pick on what day (according to the conditions). For example, on a big day, it is nice to have a longer fiberglass board (depending on your height, weight and level – here is the link of a project I did about this)

Also, steeper waves will require a more flexible board (either fiberglass or epoxy with a carbon wrap). Overall, because fiberglass are currently the most used surfboard, they are better for generally good conditions while epoxy are better for smaller and weaker waves.

(Gleeson, Gina.)

…. By the way, in order to find all this information, I had to SURF on the web ! But using a fiberglass board of course….Aha…. !

SBC 5 – School Uniforms

Hello world !

I have been discussing lately about school uniforms with several people. My school doesn’t use them, which in my opinion is a good thing. However, this topic is debatable, so please fill out this form and honestly tell me what you think….

In my opinion, school uniforms don’t allow the students to express themselves and show their personality. The clothes we wear show people around us who we are and what we like. With uniforms, I feel like people loose this sens of originality. On the other hand, wearing uniforms could decrease bullying (people make fun of others’ clothes), because they are wearing the same thing.

I have never been in a school where uniforms are mandatory, and I am personally happy about that because I know what I would hate it.

Please give me your opinion and fill out the google form !

I will create a post for the side that wins the most vote.

SBC 6 – Summer Memories

Photo taken by my dad (all rights reserved.)

This summer, we went to a ski station called “Les Deux Alpes” in France. Their skiing tracks turned into biking tracks. Me and my dad decided to rent two bikes and protections to bike for one entire day. We woke up at 6, barely ate and jumped in the car. That day was unfortunately very foggy. We were the first ones to take the chair lift.

The day went by really quickly. I was able to do a couple jumps, but I also fell quite badly.

SBC 3 – Short Story

(Free-Photos.)

Short Story

I just love surfing. In my opinion, it is more than a passion; it’s a lifestyle. That is why I traveled to Morocco not long ago. When I arrived, I did expect what was going to happen to me. As I arrived with my family, I noticed a very long beach, going on for probably 50 kilometers. The waves on that beach din not look good, plus the ocean was “messy” that day. The next day, we went to a surf school, and asked to rent a surfboard (the waves had gotten better). So, I put on my wet suit, took the board and ran to the sea. I was able to catch a few waves, but the water was extremely cold. As I got out, I noticed a photograph, standing on the dry sand was calling me. I walked to him and he told me he was the director of the “Hurley sponsoring center of Essaouira”. My face changed. He then told me he was interested to sponsor me, and if I wanted to, I should come back tomorrow. So, I said yes, walked back, and showed up the next morning. We left for another surf spot, better as he told me. When we arrived, I noticed long lines on the ocean, it was beautiful. We changed, grabbed our boards and entered in the water. It was like in a dream. The waves were abut 1.50 meters tall and would not stop coming. I start to paddle for my first wave. I feel its power behind me, … (to be continued in the comments).

SBC 2 – Visited Blogs

Hello world ! I recently visited several interesting blogs and commented on them.

One of them was Dylan’s blog. He talks about a wild range a subjects by answering comments. I read one of his post, and this is what I told him: “Dear Dylan,
I read some of your post and they are all more creative than the other ! I think that the wonder part is amazing ! I might do a similar thing with my blog….. Here is my question: Why are homework so important at school ?” I left a comment on the post “Dylan’s Wonders” because I found his idea of answering comments with posts was awesome.

Please check it out.

The second blog I visited was Fang Yu’s blog. He had  a few post talking about different topics. One of them was about the Gravity Falls show that I discovered not long ago. Here is what I told him, “Dear Fang Yu,
I have read the Gravity Falls post and found it very interesting. Your summary of the story is very precise and made me want to watch the show. Have you heard about the show called Rick and Morty? It is one of my favorite ! ” I decided to comment on that specific post to make the connection between his TV show and mine.

Please check his blog.

The third blog I visited was Jake’s blog. Most of his posts talked about him and basketball. I commented on the “My Awesome Life” post. Here is what I told him, “Dear Jake, I have read your posts and I now know a lot about basketball. This specific post can exactly connect with my own life, because I get most of what I want (physical things or mental). This post also brought up questions to me. Do you think that since we get most of what we want, we should start caring about the less lucky in terms of living conditions? ” I decided to comment on this post because while reading it, this question came up in my mind and I felt like I had to ask him what he tough about it.

Please check out his blog.

The Fourth and last blog I visited was Kaylie’s blog. She had a gallery of several tree pictures and several other posts. I commented on the gallery and this is what I told her, “Dear Kaylie,I took a closer look at the pictures you took and they all look cool. I really like the middle one on the second row because it gives the impression that the tree is extremely tall. What kind a camera are you suing to take these? Were all these pictures taken in your school campus? One advice I would give you is to keep the pictures straight. ” I decided to comment on the picture gallery because I tough the gallery idea was creative and I had not seen it yet.

Please check out her blog.

Reading blogs from people all around the blog is just amazing! We are so lucky at our age to be able to communicate with international people using advanced technology.
